A day at the Keukenhof gardens in the Netherlands.
From tulipomania to today … On a crisp Autumn day in 1593, an elderly botanist named Carolus Clusius planted a handful of tulip bulbs in a small garden at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. The act is considered by the Dutch as the birth of their famous flower business.

As the frosts recede – albeit slowly – many of us will be turning our thoughts to the great outdoors and a spot of gardening. Bourton House Garden, Cotswolds

This wonderful small garden is in Bourton-on-the-hill in Gloucestershire, England near Moreton in Marsh. It was recently named Garden of the Year. Its opening hours are a bit inconvenient but it is well worth the effort. Its creator is Monique Paice, who generously showed me around in May, 2007, and has a very deft eye for color and plant combinations.
