A day at the Keukenhof gardens in the Netherlands.
From tulipomania to today … On a crisp Autumn day in 1593, an elderly botanist named Carolus Clusius planted a handful of tulip bulbs in a small garden at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. The act is considered by the Dutch as the birth of their famous flower business.

"Among the earliest to bloom are the Dwarf Irises, usually grown in the rock-garden or as border plants. Iris pumila, a miniature form of the tall bearded types, is a compact grower, which makes it a useful plant for small gardens…

"The flat, crested flowers of I. cristata, native in the Southwest, are highly desirable for the wall-garden…

"Similar in form, but larger in size, is the English Iris, I. xiphiodes, from the mountains of Spain and France. The common name, English Iris, is derived, undoubtedly, from the fact that the plants were grown in England before 1600, and were considered indigenous."

Bourton House Garden, Cotswolds

This wonderful small garden is in Bourton-on-the-hill in Gloucestershire, England near Moreton in Marsh. It was recently named Garden of the Year. Its opening hours are a bit inconvenient but it is well worth the effort. Its creator is Monique Paice, who generously showed me around in May, 2007, and has a very deft eye for color and plant combinations.
